UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA PROFESSOR JULIAN DIERKES VISITS OUR SCHOOL

On November 17, 2022 Dr.Julian Dierkes, associate professor of the University of British Columbia visited our school and met with SIRPA Dean Dr.Battogtokh Javzandolgor, associate professor Dr.Munkh-Ulzii Batmunkh and senior lecturer Mrs.Oyunsuren Damdinsuren. During the meeting, future collaboration between SIRPA, NUM and School of Public Policy and Global Affairs, UBC on graduate level capstone projects have been discussed. Dr.Dierkes expressed his willingness to share his rich experience with SIRPA faculty and provide technical assistance to develop a capstone project syllabus. He agreed to visit SIRPA next spring as a guest professor to further this collaboration and conduct trainings for our faculty and students.

Dr. Julian Dierkes is a sociologist by training (PhD Princeton). In addition to contemporary Mongolia, his research interests focus on supplementary education, especially in Japan (see e.g. Jukupedia – Shadowing Education). He has also developed an interest in Digital Diplomacy. In UBC’s Master of Arts Asia Pacific Policy Studies (MAAPPS) program and now the Master in Public Policy and Global Affairs (MPPGA), Dr. Dierkes has co-supervised graduate projects on mining regulation in Mongolia with colleagues in mining engineering. In 2017 he taught a seminar on Mongolian politics at Humboldt University in Berlin. He has written about Mongolia for Asia Pacific Memo, East Asia Forum, the FT’s beyond BRICS, The Diplomat and elsewhere, and also consults on political risk in Mongolia.
